Watertight Business! Point Marine beat the 40m Flood Barrier
Flood protection is a hot topic, not only in the UK, but also abroad.
In July 2016 Point Marine teamed up with Zefyr Group (Innovative Building Solutions for a Sustainable Environment) to provide a watertight solution for a flood protection scheme in the UAE.
The challenge: To build and test a personnel sized hinged door to resist a 44m depth of water.
To say “that’s deep” is an understatement. The forces exerted can be measured in hundreds of tonnes causing steel to deform, seals to distort and holes through the door to leak.
The door unit was mounted to a reinforced test tank filled with water then pressurised to simulate the required 44m depth. The door passed the controlled test on 25th November 2016.
The contract included other doors which are all being shipped to the UAE for installation into a flood protection scheme.
