Kurt Christensen 1952-2025
It is with great sadness we have learned of the passing of ‘Sir’ Kurt Christensen, following a brief illness, bravely fought.
The fish auctioneer, who became a leading figure in Grimsby’s emergence in offshore wind, was crowned Humber Renewables Champion in 2023, recognising his incredible contribution to the industry.
Kurt helped welcome the major operators in the sector, setting up a business to cater for their every need in the port, going on to own early crew transfer vessels serving the near-shore wind farms.
He was part of the original regional support group Grimsby Renewables Partnership, becoming a director when formalised as a member organisation, and continuing to serve on the board of Humber Marine & Renewables when it merged with Team Humber Marine Alliance.
Born in Denmark in 1952, he arrived on the Humber as a four-year-old. His father went to sea, but Kurt stayed landside, building a sales business from the age of 15 as a trainee fish auctioneer, and a successful fishing vessel agency operation. The latter saw contacts forged that would propel him into wind when the opportunity arose, having also been appointed Danish Consul for the region, which made him a useful ally for key inward investors.
Work in seafood saw him knighted by his native Denmark, with a first-class knighthood following for the way he helped foster relations in offshore wind. For many who knew him, that was his mark. A convener, collaborator, ambassador, lobbyist and, undoubtedly, a champion.
A proud family man, Kurt leaves his wife Carol, sons Carsten and Bjorn, and three grandchildren, Conni, Jacob and Neve.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. Further details will be shared at their request.
